Ask God to lift the burden of guilt and replace it with grace.
1 John 1:9
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Guilt and conviction are not the same. God convicts us of our sins, our enemy condemns us with guilt, shame and regret. Conviction by the Holy Spirit is Godly. Condemnation and guilt are an evil tactic that the enemy uses to keep us stuck in our sins. Conviction is about what we have done where condemnation is about who we are. Guilt and condemnation attack our worth as a child of God and makes us feel as though we are too far gone for God’s grace to reach us. Conviction draws us out of our sins and closer to Jesus. Condemnation makes us run and hide from God and keeps us stuck in the patterns of our sin. Guilt has never changed anyone long term, but God’s grace does every single time.
So today we ask God to remove the heavy burden of guilt, shame, and condemnation from our loved ones and to allow them to see the grace, forgiveness, and restoration He has available for them. I pray He gives them the courage to reach for it and the strength they need to walk away from the destructive patterns of their sin. I pray that they trust in Him and take one step at a time - closer to Him and further from their addiction. Yes we want them clean and sober but more importantly we want them walking out their God-given purpose in life.
As for us loved ones, I pray that God releases us to from the burden of our guilt. As the mother of a daughter stuck in addiction, I carried a lot of guilt about mistakes I had made as a mother and convinced myself I was at least partially responsible for her addiction. My recovery taught me that I was not responsible for the decisions she made as an adult. God chose me to be her mother and when I was weak and made mistakes, He was strong.
No matter how good or bad you have been in your relationship with your loved ones, they are ultimately responsible for their choices. We have all made mistakes and done things to hurt people but God is stronger than our mistakes. He is ready to forgive us just as quickly as He is ready to forgive our addicted loved ones. He can work in our failures and weaknesses just like He can theirs. As we go forward in our relationships with our loved ones, we must go into them with the confidence of God’s grace and forgiveness. If we owe them an apology for anything we should give it but we should never make decisions based on our guilt. We should not be giving into manipulation and enabling because we feel guilty for our sins. God has forgiven us and it serves no purpose to continue to sin out of that guilt except to drive another wedge into our relationship with our loved one and with God.
May you and your loved ones both be released of the burden of your guilt so that you may reconnect in a healthy God-honoring way.
May God bless you on this journey!
Precious Heavenly Father,
We come to You today, lifting up our addicted loved ones who are weighed down by the burden of guilt. Lord, we ask that You lift this heavy weight from their hearts and replace it with Your incredible grace. Remind them that in You, there is no condemnation, and Your love is greater than their mistakes or past failures.
Help them to fully surrender their guilt to You, trusting in Your promise of forgiveness. May they come to know that through the sacrifice of Jesus, they are redeemed and set free from shame. Fill them with peace, Lord, and allow Your grace to flood every corner of their soul, giving them the strength to move forward in their recovery.
Teach them to rest in Your mercy and to embrace the new beginning You offer each day. Let them find hope in knowing that Your grace is sufficient and Your love never fails.
In Jesus’ mighty name,Amen.
