Day 22 Prayers for Sobriety

Ask for the strength to maintain their sobriety one day at a time.

1 Peter 5:8

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour."

One day at a time. Just for today. Both of these are statements those in recovery cling to, especially in the early days when the temptation to turn back is at it’s greatest. When we stand at the bottom of the mountain of recovery looking up, the climb seems impossible. If our loved ones try to take on the whole journey at one time, they will most likely fail. In our ministry, we break recovery down to doing the next right thing. Their focus has to be on the current step, the present, and what they can do in this moment - the next right thing.

When Jesus taught us to pray with the Lord’s prayer, he said “Give us today our daily bread.” When Moses and the Israelites were in the desert God provided just enough manna for that day. The strength our loved ones need to maintain their sobriety often comes the same way - just enough to get through this day, or this hour, or this minute whatever the moment may require. Working their recovery - meetings, reading the materials, Bible reading, meeting with sponsors and accountability partners,etc/ - is a daily process that’s like collecting that manna for that day to fuel their sobriety. It can seem like a lot especially if we are having to transport them or work out logistics with them but it is essential. Try not to lose patience with them.

We need daily manna too. We can get our manna by opening up the word of God and getting to know Him better. We can turn on praise music and worship Him as we go about our day. We can lower our head to pray and take our cares and concerns to Jesus. All of these things provide us the manna we need to get through our day on the good days and the bad. It will fuel us with the strength we so desperately need to walk alongside and encourage our loved ones. I pray that you will take a moment today to gather a little manna and see that God provides the strength you need… just for today.

May God bless you on this journey!

Precious Heavenly Father,

We come before You with hearts full of hope, lifting up our addicted loved ones who are struggling with addiction. Lord, we ask for Your strength and guidance as they walk the path toward sobriety. We know that this journey is not easy, but we trust in Your power to bring lasting change and freedom.

Grant them the strength to face each day with courage, taking their recovery one step at a time. Help them to rely on You in moments of weakness and temptation. Surround them with Your grace, reminding them that with Your help, all things are possible. We pray that they find peace in each small victory and comfort in knowing You are with them every step of the way.

Give them the perseverance to stay on the path of sobriety, one day at a time, trusting in Your power to sustain them. May they find their identity in You and not in their past, knowing that You are making all things new.

In Jesus’ mighty name,Amen.

Ephesians 5:18

"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit."

Thessalonians 5:6-8

"So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet."

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."

Romans 12:1-2

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

Psalm 119:9

"How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to Your word."
