Day 16 Prayers for Freedom

Ask God to break the chains of addiction and bring them true freedom.

Psalm 107:14

"He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains."

Freedom is our ultimate goal in following Jesus. Gaining freedom from sin and the chaos of this world by submitting ourselves to the one true God. He created us to live abundant, hope-filled, purpose-driven lives that shine the light of His love to those who are in the darkness. There is nothing better than growing closer and closer to Jesus and living out this goal more fully. That is what we want for our loved ones. It is more than just sobriety or getting “clean.” We want them to find complete and total God-given freedom.

Addiction is sometimes like a weed that we might pluck in our garden. We pluck the weed out one day and when we return the next day, three more have taken its place. If they don’t get to the root of the problem, they may just replace one addiction with another. Some addictions are not as destructive in our lives as alcohol and drugs but any addiction interferes with fully following and depending on God. The weed must be removed by the root and furthermore, we must plant something new and healthy to take it’s place. In my experience a relationship and devotion to Jesus Christ is the most powerful tool we have to replace our addictions with.

The energy with which they have chased dope has to go somewhere. If they devote that level of energy to following Christ and their recovery, there is no limit to what God can do in and with their lives. That’s why I love working in Christian recovery - it is an awe-inspiring thing to see someone go from devastated and broken to burning brightly in God’s love and purposes for their lives. It is an amazing thing to see and I pray that each of you praying for our loved ones today, get to see it in them.

Just like them, if we take the energy with which we have chased our addicted loved ones to try and “fix” them and devote it following Christ, there is no limit to what He can do in our lives, regardless of what is going on with our loved ones. I am so grateful that God freed my daughter from her addiction but I am even more grateful for the passion, purpose, and depth He has given me in my relationship with Him as I journeyed through this and I pray the same thing for you. I can not guarantee you that your loved one will get clean but I can guarantee that God will meet you with open arms if you will turn to Him and allow Him to carry this burden for you. He wants nothing more than to wrap you up in His arms and work inside you to make you more like Him.

If you don’t already have that relationship with Him, you can start it at any time. If you need help with that reach out to me, a local pastor, or a Christian friend and ask them to help you give your heart to the Lord. Then get in a local God-fearing, Bible-believing church and allow them to disciple you. We’ll walk alongside them to build you up in God’s word. It’s the best, most-valuable gift you can give yourself and your loved one today.

May God bless you on this journey!

Precious Heavenly Father,

We come to You lifting up our loved ones who are bound by the chains of addiction. Lord, we know that You are the God who brings freedom and that nothing is too difficult for You.

Today, we ask for Your divine intervention to break the chains of addiction that have held them captive.

Father, we pray for true freedom—the kind that only You can give. Free them not just from the physical grip of addiction, but also from the emotional, mental, and spiritual bondage it creates. Break the strongholds that keep them trapped and replace them with Your peace, hope, and strength.

Lord, give them the courage to seek help and the wisdom to lean on You through this journey. Surround them with support, and let them know they are never alone. Help them to trust in Your power and to believe in the freedom that is already available through Christ.

As Your Word says, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” We claim this promise over our loved ones today and ask for their complete healing and restoration.

In Jesus’ mighty name,

Amen.

Galatians 5:1
